Yokohama Landmark Tower

Japan loves observation decks. There are two here in Yokohama that I have visited: Landmark Tower ‘Sky Garden’ and Marine Tower; and five in Tokyo: Tokyo Tower, Tokyo Sky Tree, Mori Tower ‘Tokyo City View & Sky Deck’, Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building and the new Shibuya Sky. I have been to all of them at one point or another in my travels to Japan. I will go into more detail about each one in the future but today I want to talk about the Yokohama Landmark Tower when I went in Dec 2022.

Yokohama Landmark Tower is the tall white building on the right located in the Minato Mirai Area

Yokohama is my favourite city on the Eastern side of Japan. The waterfront area is walkable and there are many activities to do. One of the great places to visit is the Yokohama Landmark Tower.

It is a short walk from the JR Sakuragicho Station or Minatomirai subway line (not shown in the photo but has a station inside the Yokohama Landmark Tower) as I had just arrived from Kyoto via the ‘Nozomi’ class Shinkansen.

The Minatomirai subway line is also a handy way to get around the area if you do not wish to walk, take the bus or taxi. It is not covered by the Japan Rail Pass as it is a private rail network.

There is plenty of signs leading up to the front door. The observation deck is called the ‘Sky Garden’. The Yokohama Landmark Tower is a beautiful building which also has a 5-star hotel (did not know that). shops, restaurants and offices. (Thanks Wikipedia!). I think the main entrance is from the outside but I do remember exiting into the mall afterwards.

Admission was 1000 yen for adults which makes it convenient as I don’t need to fuss with change. Leading up to the elevators are some pretty decor and accent lights. When I went in Dec 2022, about two months after Japan had reopened to tourists after the pandemic, it was also near the holiday season, so don’t let the lack of people in my photos fool you to think it is not a busy place.

The place is open daily at 10 am so there is unfortunately no way to take sunrise photos but does close around 9/10 pm so that people can see and take sunset photos. Sunset is roughly the same time every season and does not swing wildly like it does in other parts of the World. I did not stay to take photos of sunset this time as I had reserved a time slot to see the newest limited time attraction; Yokohama Gundam Factory which I had recently posted.

Some photos of the area. All four sides has a different view and perspective of the city which makes it so interesting to visit.

I also love taking silhouette photos as the contrast between the brighter view from the windows in the background and the people in the foreground really pops.

Once I was done, the elevators down does not take me back to the original starting place but rather into the mall. The mall itself is nicely designed with restaurants and stores. It was after 2 pm when I was done with my visit so I grabbed a couple of onigiri (Japanese rice balls) from a store that specializes in them as snacks before I headed over to the Yokohama Gundam Factory
